Sainz says he does not regret his decision to join Ferrari

No time for regrets. As Ferrari experiences what looks like one of the worst campaigns in its storied history in Formula 1, Carlos Sainz, future recruit of Maranello, remains as enthusiastic as ever about joining the Scuderia from the 2021 season.

Leaded by a car with suspect aerodynamic efficiency and a out of breath engine, the venerable Italian institution seems mired in a slump whose end is hard to see. Attractive on paper before the start of the season, the prospect of joining a team as prestigious as Ferrari seems like a poisoned gift today.

After the debacle at Spa-Francorchamps – no SF1000 in Q3, nor in the points, on a regular basis – Ross Brawn, sporting director of Liberty Media and former Ferrari technical director, suggested that the situation at Maranello had reason to worry Sainz .

Especially McLaren is currently 3rd in the Constructors' standings, 2 places ahead of Ferrari, even if the Spaniard contributed less to Woking's harvest than his teammate Lando Norris due to stubborn bad luck.

Asked ahead of the Italian Grand Prix to know if he would have agreed to join Ferrari knowing his performances in 2020, the future recruit said: very comfortable with (m)his decision ».

« I have 100% confidence in Ferrari and its members, he said. Last year, they were able to take 7 pole positions, so it's a team that knows how to produce very good cars.

What worries me more is losing 30 points for reasons beyond my control. That's what's on my mind right now. In the evening when I go to bed, I say to myself: "How could I lose so many points, what's going on?" ".

For the rest, I'm confident and looking forward to next year ».

While awaiting his debut in red, Sainz, who has not been spared from the twists of fate this season, was able to get a first glimpse of the status that comes with a starting place at Ferrari when you drive at Monza.

« I can already feel the fervor of the fans, the way they approach me as I leave the hotel, added the Madrilenian who celebrated his 26th birthday on Monday.

The journey to the car doesn't last very long but the fans always find a way to find you and bring you energy. I realize how special it is to defend the Ferrari colors.

There is never a bad time to join this historic and prestigious team. No one ever says: “I don’t want to go to Ferrari”. If you give me this option 100 times, I will choose it all the time ».

When he joined McLaren at the end of 2018, the Woking team was also at the bottom of the wave. It has since begun a nice recovery to which Sainz is no stranger. Fans hope that the Spaniard, associated Charles Leclerc, will do the same with their favorite team.
