Carlos Sainz et Ferrari are pushing for the Madrilenian to ride in his new colors as soon as the 2020 season concludes. Most teams will stay in Abu Dhabi after the final round of the season (December 11-13) for a day of testing initially reserved for beginners (December 15).
After effective lobbying by Renault, who wanted to give Fernando Alonso more track time, the FIA however authorized the teams to field drivers who were not rookies. In theory, drivers who took part in the 2020 campaign still do not have the right to take part. A measure that Sainz and Ferrari would like to see disappear.
« I want to drive with Ferrari, it’s no secret, confided the one who will no longer be under contract McLaren as soon as the curtain falls in Abu Dhabi. I want it all the more now that the FIA has granted concessions to drivers who are neither beginners nor young.
I don't see why the FIA wouldn't allow other riders to take part. Personally, I wouldn't take anyone's place. Callum (Ilott), Robert (Shwartzmann), and Mick (Schumacher) will always have the opportunity to ride, even if I jump in the car.
Ferrari is one of the teams doing the most for young drivers at the moment. I don't see why I shouldn't be allowed to ride ».
For the moment, Ferrari plans to field 2 cars for Shwartzman and Antonio Fuoco, its development driver who works in the simulator, while Ilott will drive with Alfa Romeo, and that Schumacher will continue to make his mark with his new team Haas.
If the FIA grants a new exemption, the logical choice for Ferrari would be to exclude Fuoco, who is also no longer part of the Ferrari Driver Academy unlike the 3 other young drivers.
