Without evolution, “the Haas is still efficient” according to Günther Steiner

The Silverstone result came at just the right time for Haas. The American team ended a drought of five races without points, with 5 units registered in Great Britain. Better yet, both VF-22s finished in the top 10: a first in 3 years (during the 2019 German Grand Prix).

A finally positive result after several weeks of lows, punctuated by bad luck. While car from Banbury had surprised the whole field at the start of the season (with 5th place in Magnussen in Bahrain), the wait fell like a bellows. Although the American car showed signs of performance, it was never able to materialize in the race. The lack of changes made to the VF-22 was at the center of criticism in particular.

With this double finish in the points at Silverstone, Günther Steiner, the team director, reaffirms that the initial version of the Haas can still provide good performance, even without improvements.“I've always said we're not going to introduce improvements just because everyone else is doing it, we're going our own way. We'll introduce them when we feel we've earned enough to have something and it's not just an advertising effort, quips the former resident of Red Bull. As we have seen, the VF-22 is still performing well even with its launch package. »

According to the former Italian engineer, Haas is still set on its calendar, with an upgrade planned for the Hungarian Grand Prix. “ If all goes well, we will have a new package for Hungary, just before the summer break. Hopefully we'll be able to unlock a little more potential on the VF-22 with what we have. »

Haas can “score points in each race” says Steiner

With these 5 new points scored at Silverstone, Haas put the pressure back on Alpha Tauri for 7th place manufacturer. The Italian team is only 7 points ahead, and Günther Steiner hopes to get back into the match. “The month of July is very busy. It would be nice to score a few more points. (…) The middle of the grid is very tight this year and in each race, someone else can get into the points. We need to have a flawless weekend to get into the points because our competitors are strong. »

If the new developments will have to wait for Budapest, the Haas director is counting on his two drivers to glean other points in Austria and France. “Obviously we will fight for points, but if we don't score any, there will be a race two weeks later in France. I think we can potentially score points in each of the races. »
