While the War has been raging in Ukraine for more than 40 days now, Sebastian Vettel returned at length to the terrible situation the country is going through, while proposing some solutions for the future on the side of the Formula 1. An invigorating speech which comes to accompany the actions of the quadruple world champion since the winter tests, he who wore, like Pierre Gasly, a helmet in the colors of Ukraine.

“We won’t help them by going faster or slower on a circuit”

“We can always do something [to support the Ukrainians], admits Sebastian Vettel. Obviously, what we are witnessing is horrible. I experience it every time I immerse myself in the news. You know, when you take a day or two off because you're busy, and you read the news again, it's always a shock. Every time you think you've seen enough, there's always something more frightening. »

In February, when the conflict was becoming more and more inevitable, he was one of the first to speak out on the subject. Absent during the first two Grands Prix of the season, the German took the time to return to this sad news, arguing that F1 should do more than what was already there. In particular we organized a money collection.

“There is a lot of help and volunteers from neighboring countries, but also from other European countries. Many of their needs are just basic things, like food, blankets or baby diapers for example… Ultimately, to meet all of these needs, what you need is money. You just have to put something in place to raise money.

A lot of money circulates around Formula 1. We won't help them by going faster or slower on a circuit, but rather by organizing a money collection. This is what we should do in any case, beyond taking a public position. Solidarity isn't just about saying what you feel about people, it's also about taking action and helping."

In addition, Formula 1 had already made its contribution last month by sending a significant donation to the Unicef appeal, in the face of abuses by the Russian government. For his part, Sebastian Vettel is pushing to do more for Ukraine.

“It’s beautiful to see so many people ready to do something to help them at the borders. To help, to organize, to offer assistance, a house or a place to stay. When I hear stories of people trying to escape Ukraine, find refuge or what they went through to get here… I am still in shock.

I think I still can't figure out what's really going on there. We must do everything to help these people in need. We need to think about it and make sure we raise enough money to send it there. »
