Sergio Pérez: “Trouble getting the tires up to temperature”

After demonstrating a certain speed during the first free practice sessions on Friday on a dry track, the Racing Point RP20s of Sergio Pérez and Lance stroll sank yesterday under the Austrian deluge in qualifying for the Styrian Grand Prix.

Conditions which did not allow the two pilots to be able to express the qualities expected of the car rose, often considered a Mercedes 2019. The fault mainly lies in the use of Pirelli rain tires.

“It’s a big disappointment. said Pérez yesterday after the session, the Mexican not having been able to get through Q1. We're having a great weekend, we have a good pace in the dry, but in the wet we couldn't find our rhythm.

I had a lot of trouble generating temperature in the tires, it took me two to three laps to get there and in the end, I had a good lap but the red flag (after Antonio Giovinazzi's exit) ruined this lap.

It's a real shame because we have great potential, and we showed great things on Friday. There is nothing we can do except learn from what happened. »

With the weather forecast to be milder this Sunday, Racing Point could move up the hierarchy and thus confirm its performances on Friday. But splitting the peloton will certainly not be fun.

“It's going to be difficult to make progress to overtake, but we certainly have a good car, analyze old driver McLaren. We will try everything. We've done it before, so I hope we can do it again.

Obviously there are cars around us that have a very similar pace to us, so it will be very difficult to overtake them. It's just a question of what we can do with the strategy. We need to make sure we are back in the points because that will be very important for us. »

The Styrian Grand Prix will be to follow live on our website with our live-text, from 15:10 p.m.
