Sergio Pérez withdraws from the British GP after testing positive for Covid-19

Drama at Silverstone where Sergio Pérez has just tested positive for Coronavirus. The Racing Point driver was initially the subject of uncertain screening and did not go to Silverstone for the traditional pre-race media day.

The FOM and the FIA announced on Thursday evening that the second test had returned positive. The Mexican will therefore remain in quarantine, as provided for in the health protocol. Local authorities have also been notified as this is a public health issue.

All people who were in close contact with Pérez were identified and placed in isolation. Racing Point said in a statement that its driver was doing well and in good spirits but the latter will naturally miss the British Grand Prix. The Silverstone team hopes to see Pérez back behind the wheel of the RP20 as soon as possible.

Racing Point also assures that it wants to field 2 single-seaters this weekend and will make known the name of Pérez's replacement in due time. In theory, the client team Mercedes has an agreement with its engine manufacturer to use its official reserves Stoffel Vandoorne and Esteban Gutiérrez. But it is rumored that another option could be considered.
