Sergio Perez was one of four rookie drivers this season. The GP2 vice-champion finished the race in a good 7th place, just ahead of his teammate, although more experienced, Kamui Kobayashi. The Sauber drivers owe this performance to a one-stop strategy.
“I will never forget this race, that’s for sure, welcomes the Mexican. After putting on the soft tires, at first I thought I had to push. But then I realized that I could handle the tires well and we decided to go all the way. I lost time behind Sebastian Vettel, but I was able to overtake him. I then used the rear wing and it also opened the door for me. I am very proud of my team, the strategy worked and I am very surprised by the longevity of the tires. Sergio Perez finishes best rookie in Melbourne: Paul di Resta (Force India) finishes 12th, Jérôme d?Ambrosio (Virgin Racing) is dead last, 16th, four laps behind Sebastian Vettel. Pastor Maldonado (Williams) was, for his part, forced to abandon.
