Silverstone-EL2: Valtteri Bottas confirms

Just like in free practice 1 this morning, Valtteri Bottas et Lewis Hamilton dominated the debates on the Silverstone track, in the second driving session this Friday at Silverstone. Ferrari et Red Bull were, however, the first to rise to the forefront with Sebastian Vettel, dislodged in the process by Kimi Räikkönen then Daniel Ricciardo, author of a lap in 1'30″148.

The Mercedes W08 will finally get everyone to agree in two steps. Lewis Hamilton achieved a fantastic first lap in 1'28"780 on soft tires then in 1'28"543. The Briton then leads Räikkönen by three tenths, while Ricciardo and Vettel are one second behind.

Valtteri Bottas only moved up to fifth position at 1″5, but on medium tires. The Finn, thanks to his switch to super-soft tires, set the benchmark for the day in 1'28″496, 47 thousandths ahead of Lewis Hamilton.

The Briton seemed set to improve, before a small error in Maggotts – Becketts – Chapel which possibly created damage on the bottom of the W08 n°44. The three-time world champion remains the only driver to have achieved his best lap on soft tires.

Ferrari and Red Bull follow Mercedes

The Ferrari SF70Hs of Kimi Räikkönen and Sebastian Vettel follow in the standings at three and four tenths and precede the two Red Bull RB13s of Max Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo. Clear progress for Nico Hulkenberg with the Renault RS 17, seventh ahead of Felipe Massa (Williams). The commissioners also placed potential embarrassment from the Brazilian on Verstappen under investigation.

Fernando Alonso (McLaren) and Esteban Ocon (Force India) complete the top 10 ahead of both Toro Rosso de Carlos Sainz and Daniil Kvyat. Sergio Pérez (Force India) ranks 13th ahead of the first Haas VF17 of Romain Grosjean.

Lance stroll (Williams), Stoffel Vandoorne (McLaren), Kevin Magnussen (Haas), returned to his seat after giving up his place this morning to the Italian Antonio Giovinazzi, Jolyon Palmer (Renault) and the Saubers of Marcus Ericsson and Pascal Wehrlein follow in the standings.

Several drivers made mistakes in the Maggotts – Becketts – Chapel sequence at the start of the session, including Carlos Sainz, whose flat bottom of his car was changed immediately. Felipe Massa and Kimi Räikkönen were also trapped within a few seconds of each other at the start of the last twenty minutes, the Finn managing to escape from the gravel trap.

The third free practice session will take place tomorrow from 11 a.m., before qualifying to be followed live with commentary on our website from 14 p.m.
