Silverstone remains uncertain beyond 2019

While Silverstone will host the 69th edition of the British GP this weekend, the British Racing Drivers’ Club (BRDC), owner of the circuit, is still concerned about the future of the track within the calendar of the race. F1.

The BRDC, however, has a long-term contract with the flagship single-seater championship valid until 2027, the company holding the rights to the discipline Liberty Media being in favor of the conservation of the historic Grands Prix, but the organizers of the event are concerned about possible financial losses by hosting such an event.

The BBC reported through a letter communicated to BRDC members by President John Grant that the suspension clause could be activated at the end of the 2019 season.

The speech is, however, nuanced, evoking in particular the wish of Liberty Media and the BRDC to see the contract extended under conditions satisfactory to both parties, the efforts noted to improve the public experience and that Silverstone remains “the only realistic place, at least in the short term” to host the Grand Prix. This last point thus comes to counter speculation about an event contested in the streets of London.

Liberty Media should at least launch a new race on the F1 calendar next year with Miami (Florida). Conversely, the future of the German GP seems compromised for 2019. The owners of the discipline in any case wish to increase the number of events per season.
