Sir Jackie Stewart: some drivers take too many risks

La F1 was recently marked by two spectacular accidents with the flight of Max Verstappen following contact with Romain Grosjean at the Monaco GP May 24 and the clash between Fernando Alonso and Kimi Räikkönen at the Austrian GP June 21st. These clashes occur while the paddock is still awaiting news regarding the state of health of Jules Bianchi following his crash at Suzuka on October 5, 2014.

If the discipline is criticized for its lack of spectacle, Sir Jackie Stewart nevertheless believes that some pilots sometimes take too big risks. “The accident of Max Verstappen could have been fatal”, recalled the three-time world champion in Der Tagesspiegel. « Lance stroll had a terrible accident last month at Monza in F3 (see: video of Race 2 at Monza from 12:10) and he was able to return to the pits on foot. His father Lawrence showed me the video in Montreal and I was shocked like his father when realizing what could have happened to his son. » The F3 European Championship was once again marked by spectacular track exits last weekend at Spa-Francorchamps.

“The words of pilots no longer have any weight”, regretted Sir Jackie Stewart. “Previously, we could boycott events and have them removed from the calendar. So many people in F1 administration fear that the drivers will regain power. But some of them imagine that we no longer have to worry about security. Perhaps it is because many of them are still very young and most are not even married. »
