Smedley: '2020 could be even worse for Williams'

Williams F1 has been going through a very difficult period in recent years. While it was in the top three a few years ago, the Grove team declined from 2016 until finding itself in last position in the championship for the last two seasons, 2019 being the worst result with just one point entered.

Rob Smedley, who left the team at the end of the 2018 season, is not overly optimistic about the near future of his former team.

“There’s always this philosophy that it can’t get any worse. But having been in the world of motorsport and that of F1 in particular, (I can say that) reality allows it. We say to ourselves that it cannot be worse than in 2019, but we were already saying that in 2018 and 2017”, recalled the former engineer to Reuters agency.

However, Rob Smedley hopes that he will see the team bounce back despite a difficult context.

“Those who think that Williams can suddenly return to the Top 5 are seriously mistaken, added the former engineer. I can hope now that I'm out of the team. This is an unfortunate case. I'm still of the generation that remembers Williams winning the title. Seeing them decline is heartbreaking as an F1 fan. »

Williams will once again line up George Russell alongside Nicholas latifi, new rookie who will take the place of Robert Kubica.
