Stefano Domenicali set to succeed Chase Carey as F1 boss

He is the one who oversaw Ferrari's last victorious campaign. It was in 2008 during his first season at the head of the Team. Stefano Domenicali, 55, is about to be named boss of the Formula 1 replacing the American Chase Carey, in office since 2017 and whose mission will end on a positive note with the signing of the new Concorde Agreements (2021-2025) by the 10 teams in the current field.

Revealed by our colleagues from RaceFans, the information was taken up by Reuters et BBC Sport, and confirmed to AUTOhebdo by a source close to the matter, who told us that Carey should remain involved in F1. When contacted, Liberty Media declined to comment on the news.

Born in 1965 in Imola (Italy), Domenicali joined Ferrari in 1991 after leaving the University of Bologna. After climbing the ranks within the Maranello house, he succeeded Jean Todt at the head of the venerable Italian institution in 2008, the year of the most recent title won by Ferrari (Constructors with Kimi Räikkönen and Felipe Massa as drivers).

Domenicali will remain in charge until 2014 and will see Fernando Alonso narrowly missing out on the Driver crowns in 2010 and 2012 despite equipment clearly less efficient than that provided to Sebastian Vettel in Red Bull

Domenicali announces his resignation after 3 disappointing first Grands Prix in 2014 and is replaced by Marco Mattiacci, who will only stay a few months before the promotion of Maurizio Arrivabene.

Domenicali first bounced back to the FIA where he became president of the Single-seater commission at the end of 2014. Two years later, he was appointed general manager of Lamborghini after first joining the Audi group in a senior management role. .

With the upcoming appointment of Domenicali at the head of F1, there are now three former historic managers of Ferrari who occupy key positions in the highest echelons of the premier category.

Former team principal Jean Todt has been president of the FIA since 2009 – the Frenchman has nevertheless made it known that he will not run for a 4th term at the end of 2021 – while former technical leader Ross Brawn occupies the role of director general in charge of sport and technology at Liberty Media since the American group took over in 2017.
