Steiner defends grid penalties

The proposal from Ross Brawn, the sporting and technical director of the F1, suggested the idea of removing penalties on the Grand Prix grid following changes to elements on the Power Units. Last weekend at the Italian GP, no less than 9 drivers received sanctions on the Monza grid.

If these penalties are often criticized, the Team Principal of Haas F1 Team Günther Steiner defends the relevance of these sanctions by pointing out the consequences of such a withdrawal.

“We did it for a good reason: cost control, recalled Günther Steiner, quoted by ESPN F1. If you only lost one place on the grid, for example, the leading teams would be even further ahead because they could change everything every time and be even faster. Just see Ricciardo who received 35 place penalties and finished 4th (at Monza). We should spend even more money. »

Günther Steiner also opposes the prospect of removing points from the Manufacturers' Championship, stressing that the teams are mainly focused on the Drivers' classification and that the team classification would risk being neglected.

“What is most valuable? The Manufacturers or Drivers title? If you only want to win the Drivers' Championship, you could install a new engine every race. The manufacturer would finish last but the driver would win. We would certainly have two different championships but that would not make the races better”, underlined Günther Steiner.
