Steiner doesn't want Callum Ilott to try to impress Haas in FP1

It's always tempting to want to impress during an audition. Especially when a promotion in Formula 1 is potentially at stake.

While Haas is one of the rare teams in the field to have not yet confirmed its driver duo for the 2021 season, the American team welcomes Callum ilott this week-end at the Nürburgring. The Briton, member of the Ferrari Driver Academy, will replace Romain Grosjean this Friday during Free Practice 1 of the Eifel Grand Prix

« I don't want him to try to impress us, said Steiner ahead of the 11th round of the 2020 season. Because when you try to shine, you tend to disappoint by trying to force things.

It's not easy to ride in Free Practice because you only have 90 minutes and a lot of pressure. This is not an ideal scenario for young drivers but it still gives them some driving time at a time when testing is minimal.

This also gives them great media visibility. The proof is that you wouldn’t be here talking to me about Callum Ilott if he wasn’t riding!

I met him briefly this morning. He does a good job of F2 this season. The goal is for him not to do anything stupid, like bend the car ».

Steiner knows how to give young people confidence! The truculent Italian recently mentioned a shortlist of around ten candidates for the Haas seats in 2021, including the current holders Kevin Magnussen and Grosjean. Surprisingly, Steiner assures that Ilott “ not part of it at the moment " because " he's a Ferrari driver and it's up to them what their plans are for him, but he could join tomorrow ». Crystal clear!

The main team, however, specifies that Haas “ was getting closer » of an announcement as to the identity of its 2021 drivers.
