Since the start of the weekend, he is clearly not the Racing Point driver we talk about the most. Lance stroll however, continues the good momentum started at the Hungarian Grand Prix (3rd in qualifying, 4th in the race) and ends the opening day of the British GP with the time reference on the Northamptonshire track.

The Canadian, whose usual teammate Sergio Pérez had to withdraw after testing positive for Coronavirus, signs a time of 1’27”274. Stroll gets ahead of Red Bull byAlexander albon of 90 thousandths. Small consolation for the Thai, victim of an off-track event at Stowe which resulted in a red flag and shortened his work session.

The highest ranked Mercedes is in 3rd place in the hands of Valtteri Bottas. His teammate and current leader of the Drivers' championship, Lewis Hamilton, must be satisfied with the 5th beat. Between the two Black Arrows slips the Ferrari de Charles Leclerc

Carlos Sainz hoist his McLaren in 6th position, in front of the ghost Nico Hulkenberg aboard the second Racing Point. The German pilot, called up at the last minute to replace Pérez, takes in its wake theAlpha Tauri de Pierre Gasly, Renault de Daniel Ricciardo, and theAlfa Romeo by Kimi Räikkönen.

A rather unusual looking top 10, probably due to the timing of the red flag caused by Albon. Indeed, drivers are used to setting their best mark in EL2 mid-session before switching to long stints.

Hence the 14th place of Max Verstappen at Red Bull for example, the Dutchman being hampered in his fast lap by the Haas de Romain Grosjean, 16th in the end. The 3rd and last tricolor national, Esteban Ocon, is in 12th position with his Renault R.S.20.

Deprived of EL1 due to an interchange problem, Sebastian Vettel had another complicated session aboard the Ferrari SF1000. The four-time German world champion, whose crankset had to be changed during the session, only appears in 18th place.
