The sprint format is being introduced for the first time in this 2022 season. After the three 2021 tests at Silverstone, Monza and Interlagos, it is Imola and the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix which are hosting this 100km race held on Saturday .

Like last year, the classification for this race will depend on the starting grid for this Sunday. However, some modifications should be noted. This concerns in particular the scale of points, since it is now the first eight who will be rewarded, with a jackpot of eight points for the winner. The latter will no longer be credited as the official pole sitter of the weekend, this honor going to the driver who dominated Friday qualifying.

He is the reigning champion Max Verstappen who will start in pole position in this sprint race. The Dutchman of Red Bull ahead of the championship leader Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) and Lando Norris (McLaren). Fourth, Kevin Magnussen (Haas) signed the best result in Haas history in the timed exercise. Sergio Pérez (Red Bull) will only start in seventh position while Carlos Sainz (Ferrari) will be even further away, in tenth place.

Qualifying was once again complicated for Mercedes, since for the first time since the Japanese Grand Prix in 2012, no Silver Arrow appeared in Q3. George Russell finished 11e and first eliminated while Lewis Hamilton ranked in 13e position. Mick Schumacher (Haas) came between the two teammates. We will have to go to the back of the grid to find the French, since Pierre Gasly (Alpha Tauri) will be in 17th place and Esteban Ocon (Alpine) in the 19th.
