Tost turns on Renault: They just have to do a better job

Franz Tost did not need to specify who the attack was aimed at. In the Austrian's viewfinder, everyone quickly recognized the profile of the Diamond. For many months, Renault is openly annoyed by the close relationships that certain mid-grid teams maintain with the top teams in the field on a technical level.

Cyril Abiteboul, boss of the French manufacturer's factory team, had clarified in Australia that Renault was still awaiting guarantees on the subject from Liberty Media and the FIA in the various 2021 regulations. Asked about the concerns and criticisms of his French counterpart, Tost, did not hesitate to bring out the heavy artillery.

« First of all, if the manager of a factory team complains about being overtaken by a smaller team, it's because he simply hasn't done his homework properly., said the Austrian. Toro Rosso uses gearbox Red Bull from last year, last year's Red Bull rear suspension and we're doing most of the front suspension.

The reason we are so competitive is because of the great powertrain that Honda gives us. It seems that not everyone can say the same and they should stop whining all the time. They better concentrate on their job ».

Remember that Toro Rosso used Renault hybrid engines in 2014-15 then 2017. Present alongside Tost at the FIA press conference, Zak Brown, director of Mclaren racing, for its part, posed itself as an ally of its engine manufacturer Renault on the question of the independence of certain teams on the grid.

« The sport has evolved in such a way that new models have emerged; we would like the F1 returns to a certain form of purity in terms of the nature of a builder, said the American manager. They do a great job. We all know what the rules allow and they exploit it to perfection. Now we would like everyone to be a little more independent in the future ».
