Toto Wolff against the increase in downforce

While Lewis Hamilton had shown itself opposed to the increase in aero support in the next regulation of the F1 expected for 2017, the pilot Mercedes is joined by his boss Toto wolff. Both fear that this change will make overtaking even more difficult and racing more boring.

“The single-seaters will no longer be able to follow each other”, worried the executive director of Mercedes Motorsport. “The car following a competitor will have more disruption. For the moment we lose support when we closely follow another car, an example of this was Lewis and Max (Verstappen) in Melbourne (Australia). The phenomenon will recur on a larger scale next year. It was a mistake to add downforce, it's a bad decision for F1 and its overtaking. »

Toto Wolff wants to demonstrate that current F1 cars are sufficiently efficient and takes as proof the lap record of the Sakhir circuit broken by Lewis Hamilton during the last Bahrain Grand Prix contested on the weekend of April 3.

“We achieved this with a heavier car and standard tires, unlike in the past where there was a tire war between Michelin and Bridgestone. This is a major achievement that we should highlight more to the public rather than only discussing the things that are wrong in the discipline. We should know that this hybrid engine is perhaps the most powerful ever produced in F1 and that we have broken this record compared to the time of the V10s. These cars are damn fast, they are the most efficient in the world”, underlined the Austrian.
