Toto Wolff defends Lewis Hamilton

Yesterday after his pole position, Lewis Hamilton received a real ovation from the British public at Silverstone, more than delighted to see one of its representatives sign his 67th career pole position, placing him one point shy of the record Michael Schumacher.

A renewed communion between Hamilton and his public, which seems far from the criticisms expressed by the English press following the absence of the triple world champion at the show F1 Live London organized during the week in the streets of London.

Lewis Hamilton had, by personal choice as he indicated, decided to give himself two days of respite, thus missing the event held as close as possible to English fans in the capital. Yesterday in the Silverstone paddock, Toto wolff, boss of Mercedes-Benz Motorsport, wanted to respond to the criticism towards its driver.

« The way he was treated by some media is wrong and unfair, confessed Wolff, quoted by Sky Sports F1. Before his home race at Silverstone and after the difficult weekends in Baku and Austria, treating the national superstar this way is absolutely the opposite of how I see things .

To question whether a three-time world champion, who has just beaten Ayrton Senna's number of poles, and who is going to beat Michael Schumacher's record, understands how to prepare is an insult. »

Freedom granted to Hamilton

Toto Wolff, who had to manage the growing rivalry between Hamilton and Nico Rosberg for three seasons, also recalled that he did not intervene in any way in his driver's schedule outside of race weekends.

« If he feels that getting away from the Formula 1 environment, being with his friends, helps him extract performance then so be it, continues the Austrian. I'm perfectly fine with that. We highlighted the risk that it could be frowned upon not to attend the events. But in the team, there was never a problem, and between us, there was never issue. »
