Toto Wolff: Mercedes always wanted to keep Rosberg

The clashes between Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg at the Spanish and Austrian Grands Prix have raised doubts about the German's contract extension, under discussion since the start of the year with Mercedes. The starred manufacturer finally confirmed this morning that the Championship leader will remain in his team for the next two seasons.

Toto wolff, the executive director of Mercedes F1 which seeks to reframe its drivers, assured that the incidents between the two holders did not compromise discussions with Nico Rosberg.

“There was never any doubt that we wanted to stay with Nico and I suppose it was in his interest to stay in the best car, commented the Austrian on Sky Sports. We had a good spirit in these discussions but the final signing was only made last night. »

Toto Wolff does not imagine that the fight for the title will take place calmly, now that the contracts of the two drivers have been extended.

“I never believe that the problems are behind us, he added. It's quite "rock and roll", but we are responsible for this decision. We know the road can be bumpy having two No. 1 drivers pushing each other. It improves the performance of the car, but certain moments are difficult to manage. »
