Four months later, the 2021 season finale of Formula 1 in Abu Dhabi remains a sensitive subject among Mercedes. The title lost in the last round by Lewis Hamilton has still not been digested at Backley. Toto wolff has not hidden his resentment against Michael Masi, the former Formula 1 racing director, replaced since this episode by Niels Wittich and Edoardo Freitas.

"He was just immune to any feedback and even today he hasn't thought properly about the fact that he did something wrong, declared the Austrian to the British press agency PA. It's quite interesting because I had lunch with him [Masi] on the Wednesday before the race, and I told him: “I really want to tell you, without being condescending, that you need to take criticism on board and grow from there. Lewis does it every day, but you're a guy who always seems to know better than the rest. » It wasn't about influencing him, but about giving him my honest opinion that he shouldn't block outside opinions as if they were wrong. »

The boss of the Mercedes team did not stop there. “You hear from the pilots and how the pilot briefings were conducted [by Masi] and some of the guys said it was almost disrespectful the way he treated, he adds. He was a liability to the sport because everyone kept talking about Abu Dhabi and the race director, and the race director should not be someone who is talked about, but someone who does his work and ensures that the race takes place in accordance with the regulations. »

Toto Wolff and Michael Masi will definitely not spend their next vacation together.

Having worked with New Zealanders and Australians, we understand the rivalry on a rugby field. If I had to summarize, the Australian is a rough-hewn Yankee, full of himself, who knows absolutely everything and therefore doesn't need advice. Toto Wolf's point of view on Michael Masi unfortunately hardly surprises me!
