Despite himself, he was the disruptive element in qualifying at Interlagos this Friday. George Russell (Mercedes) was the victim of an almost improbable exit from the track during his second flying lap in Q2.

Approaching turn 4, the Briton braked on the paint line, locked the wheels, and couldn't help but go straight ahead. While trying to get out of the gravel trap, the Mercedes spun and Russell found himself stuck in the sand and unable to get going again. This small error caused a red flag when he was 3rd and the rain started to fall again.

With a greasy and wet track, the other drivers remained stuck in their pits and were unable to improve their mark. Enough to satisfy the poleman, Kevin Magnussen (Haas), but also Russell himself who scored a 3rd Top 3 in qualifying this season.

“First, congratulations to Kevin [Magnussen] for pole, what a fantastic job he did with Haas! They really deserve this pole with all their efforts. 3rd is not really where we want to be, but it’s a very good place to start tomorrow. »

The rain, “a great opportunity” for George Russell

Slightly left behind by Ferrari and Red Bull During Free Practice 1, the Mercedes could have taken advantage of the changing weather conditions to win a second pole this season, after the one won by Russell in Hungary.

The young Englishman (24 years old) is now focusing on the race where he hopes to deliver a good duel with Max Verstappen, who will jump right in front of him. “It’s a great opportunity to finish ahead of Max [Verstappen] and Red Bull if we have changing conditions. I hope the weather won't be too bad for the fans to enjoy it. We will try to take advantage of it to have a good race tomorrow. »

His teammate Lewis Hamilton had to settle for 8th time.
