The study underlines the importance of this industry, which is estimated directly and indirectly at 160 billion euros in annual global turnover and 1,5 million direct or indirect jobs. It demonstrates that motorsport can contribute to the rebound of the economy in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic.
This work is based on in-depth market research involving more than 20 interviews with a range of participants – local automobile clubs, venue operators, global commercial rights holders, national promoters and team principals – and based on all existing data; official data from the FIA, global and regional championships, international series, FIA approved venues and consultation with over 000 industry stakeholders.
This study is the first of its type worldwide. The main conclusions of this research are:
159,2 BILLION EUROS IN OVERALL ANNUAL TURNOVER – This data brings together the market value of goods and services produced by the motorsport industry, plus the knock-on or multiplier effects of direct spending across the entire the economy. For example, the money spent at the restaurant by event participants is counted: additional materials, food and drinks, salaries and profits of the owner. Wages spent by restaurant employees (for example on household items) are re-injected into a larger part of the economy, creating direct and indirect benefits.
66,9 BILLION EUROS OF TOTAL VALUE ADDED – This figure corresponds to the market value of goods and services produced by the motorsport industry, plus the ripple effects or multipliers of direct spending across the whole economy.
1,5 MILLION DIRECT AND INDIRECT JOBS – This value covers the number of paid jobs (full-time, part-time and casual) directly supported by the motorsport industry.
302 OFFICIALS, COMMISSIONERS AND VOLUNTEERS (UNPAID)
2,7 MILLION PARTICIPANTS IN MOTORSPORT ACTIVITIES (competitors, officials, commissioners and volunteers)
60 PROOFS
7200 FACILITIES, TRACKS AND SITES
21 LOCAL MOTORSPORT CLUBS
“This report reveals that the motorsport industry represents an annual turnover of 160 billion euros and 1,5 million direct and indirect jobs, specifies FIA president Jean Todt.
This is remarkable and demonstrates that our sport can effectively contribute to the rebound of the economy during this period of the Covid-19 pandemic. I thank EY-Parthenon, our Member Clubs, the promoters of the FIA championships and all those who participated in this study of global interest. »
