Yesterday, after the qualifying session, the team Williams had indicated that Valtteri Bottas had back pain, and went to first consult the FIA doctors. The decision was finally made to take the Finn to hospital for additional examinations. The Grove team was not then able to confirm or not the participation of its driver for the race.
The scans carried out subsequently revealed a small tear in the annular part of an intervertebral disc in the lower back. After a series of tests, the FIA Medical Delegate finally declared Bottas unfit to race. Williams will therefore only be racing with a single FW37 on track in Melbourne, Australia and is doing everything to ensure its driver is ready for the next Grand Prix in Malaysia (March 27-29).
