Vandoorne: The figures do not fully reflect reality

Arrived in Formula 1 crowned with a fine reputation forged by an immaculate record in the junior categories, the Belgian has since seen his star fade, eclipsed by the star of Asturias.

In 6 races this season, Vandoorne has never been ahead Alonso in qualifying, nor in the race when both men saw the checkered flag. The former GP2 Series champion currently occupies 15th place in the Drivers' standings, 24 points and 8 places behind his double world champion teammate.

« I don't think the numbers tell the whole story, Vandoorne said ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix. Obviously the statistics are what they are but I think actually Fernando and I are very, very close in terms of performance.

If I compare to last year, I feel in a much better position. I think events haven't always worked out in my favor. We lacked a bit of success on several occasions. It must also be recognized that Fernando was sometimes faster, which is normal ».

The transition from the Honda engine to the block Renault should have heralded the beginning of the reconquest for McLaren This year. But if the balance sheet at the third of the season is much better than 12 months earlier, the Woking team suffers from the comparison with the other teams powered by the Losange, especially Red Bull already author of a pair of victories in 2018.

« We are moving in the right direction after having had a complicated start to the season, added Vandoorne. There were a lot of expectations around the team and we haven't been able to meet them so far. We must continue to progress, hoping to reach another level this weekend. ».
