The recent disruptions to the Japanese Grand Prix program (qualifying and racing on Sunday) have put a new spotlight on the possibility of changing the layout of the weekends of Formula 1 in 2020.
In his usual post-GP letter, Ross Brawn, Motor Sports Director of Liberty Media, gave a very clear opinion on this subject. The changes would only be minimal.
“I will be honest and say that a very powerful consensus has been found, especially among the organizers (from GP), to maintain a three-day track activity format, although on a different schedule. »
After an in-depth analysis, we concluded that the best solution was to keep the event over three days, while revising the Friday format. (currently allocated to two free practice sessions and qualifying for the support races. Editor's note).
“The rest would be unchanged, with qualifying on Saturday and the race on Sunday”, details Ross Brawn. No revolution in sight therefore, even if the debate will be brought to the meeting between F1 teams in Paris this Wednesday, October 15.
