Max Verstappen won the first pole of his career at the Hungarian GP after beating Valtteri Bottas to the wire.

Verstappen takes first pole at Hungarian GP

Max Verstappen (Red Bull) won his first pole in F1 by winning qualifying for the Hungarian GP at the Hungaroring. The Dutchman set the lap record in 1’14”572 and was 18 thousandths ahead of the Mercedes de Valtteri Bottas. He thus becomes the 100th pole-sitter in F1 history.

Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) was further behind with 2 tenths behind. The championship leader beat the Ferrari de Charles Leclerc et Sebastian Vettel. The Monegasque suffered a big scare by damaging his rear wing after a spin in the last corner in Q1.

 

Pierre Gasly (Red Bull) is only 6th, still 9 tenths behind his teammate. French precedes McLaren de Lando Norris et Carlos Sainz Jr. Romain Grosjean (Haas) and Kimi Räikkönen (Alfa Romeo) completed the Top 10.

Nico Hulkenberg (Renault) missed Q3 or 5 hundredths behind Kimi Räikkönen (Alfa Romeo). German precedes Toro Rosso byAlexander albon and Daniil Kvyat. Antonio Giovinazzi (Alfa Romeo) and Kevin Magnussen (Haas) completed the classification of the session, but the Italian is under investigation for having obstructed Lance stroll (Racing Point) in Q1. He finally received 3 places on the grid.

Daniel Ricciardo (Renault) was eliminated in the first session. The Australian was hampered during his last attempt by traffic and only took 18th place behind George Russell (Williams) and Sergio Pérez (Racing Point). Lance Stroll and Robert Kubica (Williams) completed the rankings.
