Verstappen narrowly fails to win: “We couldn’t have guessed” the punctures

We didn't often see him on the television screen this Sunday afternoon, however Max Verstappen (Red Bull) finished only 5”8 behind winner Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) at Silverstone (Great Britain) with an additional pit stop!

The Dutchman could have benefited from an incredible end to the race to win. Indeed, the leader of the event covered a good part of the last lap with a puncture on the left front wheel.

But the pilot Red Bull did not have time to catch up with him, his team having called him to put on soft tires to aim for the lap record and the bonus point that goes with it. A goal achieved.

"We couldn't guess what was going to happen, replied the bearer of number 33. Of course, the Mercedes were too fast in the race, but with 10 laps to go, I already felt less comfortable with my tires.

Valtteri (Bottas) had his puncture, I took my foot off the gas to aim for the best lap then returned to the pits. I then saw that Lewis had also suffered a puncture, but I am very happy with this second place, it is a very good result for us. »
