Verstappen doesn't expect to fight for pole

In view of this Friday, Max Verstappen has every chance of titillating Mercedes for pole on Saturday. The Dutchman actually finished in the same tenth as Lewis Hamilton et Valtteri Bottas in free practice 1, then dominated free practice 2.

“Overall I am happy” the pilot reacted Red Bull. “The car is performing well, we had a good start to the weekend even if there are still things to improve. »

Despite these good results, Verstappen believes he will not be able to fight for pole on Saturday with the Mercedes. “ I think they are having a bit of trouble finding the balance of the car, but they will be stronger tomorrow, I really don't expect to get pole. »

At the start of the season, this seemed logical. On the other hand, we expect the Racing Points to be even faster at Spa. A danger for Red Bull. “ In qualifying yes, I think they can annoy us. But in the race everything should be back to normal. »

For once this season, Max Verstappen could see his teammate nearby. Alexander albon drove in the best times on Friday, between three and four tenths behind Verstappen. “We have improved a lot of things over the last two weeks and it seems to be working. I already feel more confident in the car. »

The Thai is competing in his first grand prix with the references of the previous year, since he started with Red Bull in Belgium in 2019. “It helps a lot to have this experience in the same car, I knew straight away what I wanted to do when I came, it feels good. »

The Red Bulls can be satisfied with their first day, but the rain could change things for the rest of the weekend.
