This is a first for Max Verstappen (Red Bull) in 2018. The Dutchman did not make a blunder during an entire race weekend! Dominant in free practice, the 20-year-old driver knew however that starting third the task was going to be complicated.
However, he tried to stand out from his opponents by opting for ultra-soft tires (purple sidewalls) at the start, in order to benefit from better grip on the first laps. The gamble almost paid off when it reached the height of the Mercedes de Valtteri Bottas between the first two turns. The two men made contact, but the positions remained frozen.

From then on, the Red Bull would have a rather quiet race, which did not displease its driver. “ It was a great race! We were very competitive today. Unfortunately, we had to stop a little earlier than planned because my tires were too worn », reveals the Dutchman.
Max Verstappen had a second opportunity at the very end of the race to get back on Valtteri Bottas; wasted effort. “It’s a shame I crossed the finish line right behind him! »
His boss Christian Horner was smiling again, after a spring spent lecturing his driver. “It’s an extremely strong weekend from him. This is ideal for tackling the next rounds. »
