Sebastian Vettel (Ferrari) set the best time of the first morning of testing in Barcelona by completing a lap of the Catalunya circuit in 1'22''791 with an SF70H shod on medium tyres. The four-time world champion was more than 3 tenths ahead of the Mercedes W08 from Valtteri Bottas who was the most diligent with 79 laps covered, 17 more than the German.
Sergio Pérez (Force India) completes the top three, half a second behind the Silver Arrow after also choosing the yellow sidewall tires to establish his best performance. Felipe Massa (Williams) and Carlos Sainz Jr. (Toro Rosso) complete the top five ahead Nico Hulkenberg (Renault).
Kevin Magnussen (Haas) was able to set the 7th fastest time, but the start of testing was complicated for the Dane. After suffering a slight mechanical problem when leaving the stands, the former Renault Sport resident F1 Team spun and damaged his front wing.
Marcus Ericsson (Sauber) and Daniel Ricciardo (Red Bull) complete the list of times, the Australian having experienced a sensor problem on the RB13 forcing him to stay in the pits for a while.
McLaren was unable to complete an exit lap with the MCL32 led by Fernando Alonso. Oil problem requires lengthy repairs for Woking stable.
