As previously announced, Friday June 28 at 9:00 a.m. a meeting will be held between the teams and the Italian manufacturer Pirelli to discuss a possible return to the 2018 tire architecture.
Asked about the beneficial repercussions that such a measure could have on Ferrari, the four-time world champion was cautious during his meeting with the press in the Spielberg paddock today.
“Until we drive the current cars on last year's tires, it's impossible to answer that question. It is an established fact that we are having more difficulty than last year in getting these tires to operate in the correct operating window both during qualifying and in the race. Let’s see what will come out of this meeting and we will act accordingly…”
As to whether such a measure would be able to add a little spice to this 2019 season marked by domination Mercedes, the German is on the other hand more affirmative. Obviously, he fully supports the project.
“As it is now, the hierarchy is quite fixed with Mercedes doing a very good job at the front and the others trying to catch up behind. It would certainly be an element to hope to mix things up. There are other teams where the drivers would certainly agree with this solution. To me it's pretty clear, but obviously everyone has their opinion. »
