Vettel: “Michael Masi should not be proud of what happened today”

A few seconds before the terrible accident of Lando Norris at the top of Raidillon, Sebastian Vettel had warned on the radio that it was necessary to put up a red flag in view of the quantity of water which was too large on the Spa-Francorchamps circuit. The German pilot also stood out by stopping near the Norris wreck to ask the British pilot if he was okay. A very classy gesture from the pilot Aston Martin. It was therefore logically a dissatisfied Vettel at the end of Q3 who stopped in the interview area, not understanding Michael Masi's decisions.

“I think Michael Masi is not proud of what happened, says Vettel after qualifying. When I arrived in Eau Rouge on my exit lap, there was really a lot of water. I said on the radio that we needed a red flag. And to be honest, I think Q3 shouldn't have started at all. »

The four-time world champion finds, among other things, that there is no consistency in decisions and takes Q1 a few minutes before as an example.

“We postponed the start of Q1 when there was less water than that, underlines the German. So I don't really understand why we are sent on the track on one side and not on the other. It's easy to complain after things happen, but these incidents shouldn't happen. »

The Aston Martin driver nevertheless set the 5th time during the qualifying session, behind his former teammate Daniel Ricciardo. A great opportunity for him to score big points, especially when his teammate Lance stroll will start last.

“I went a little wide at turn 8 so I could have done a little better, admits Vettel. I'm very happy for George Russell but I think we could have been second too. It’s still a good result and I’m happy to start at the top of the grid tomorrow. »

3 weeks after his podium which he lost by decision of the commissioners, Vettel will have the opportunity tomorrow to fight for a new top 3.
