Vettel: “We were still too far away”

Sebastian Vettel saw his rival Lewis Hamilton conquer a 5th world title this year after a long duel between the two men. The resident of the Team Ferrari even had the advantage in the first part of the season before being dominated by the star-studded team in the second half of the year.

If the German seemed to lose his chances by making several errors, the latter nevertheless believes that the Ferrari SF71H still lacked rhythm against the Mercedes W09.

“It’s already a good thing to be able to fight for the title as has been the case for the last two seasons, recognized the Ferrari driver. But if we take the year as a whole, we were still too far away. Things were looking good until mid-season, including perhaps the races at Spa (Belgium) and Monza (Italy). After that we saw our performances drop and that made things quite difficult for us. »

“At the same time, Lewis and Mercedes delivered a series of very successful races, scoring many points and many victories. The gap was then too high. It was in Mexico that I really understood that it would be difficult because we always tend to want to believe in it and to fight until the end. I didn't really follow the rankings after that because I knew they weren't in my favor.", added the four-time world champion.
