While waiting for the start of the Miami Grand Prix scheduled for this Sunday, May 8 at 21:30 p.m. French time, Esteban Ocon (Alpine) is in spite of himself the author of the striking image of this first edition of the Florida meeting. The Frenchman made a mistake during Free Practice 3 on Saturday morning between turns 13 and 14:

This accident does not suggest it, but the impact of the Norman against the concrete wall was recorded at 51 G, the same intensity as Max Verstappen's spectacular crash (Red Bull) in the first round of the British Grand Prix at Silverstone in the summer of 2021.

Without any energy absorption device, whether a line of tires or Tecpro, the French driver therefore suffered a much stronger impact. Fortunately, apart from a slight pain in one leg, the winner of the 2021 Hungarian Grand Prix was left with a fright, and a lot of anger.

According to him, TecPro should have been installed at this location on the Miami circuit. Carlos Sainz Jr. (Ferrari) have lived an almost identical accident during Free Practice 2, and the two men went to knock at the FIA office to modify the safety of this corner.

“It is unacceptable that there is no Tecpro at that place, declared Esteban Ocon at the microphone of Canal+. We talked about it with Carlos (Sainz Jr) here (Friday), we spoke about it with the Race Direction, unfortunately it was not taken into account. It was (an impact) at 51 G, anyway. »

Carlos was hurt on Friday, me too. The FIA clearly needs to push for more safety, and take a good look at these places which may not seem like big shocks, but which really were in the end.."

Forced to change chassis on Saturday evening, Esteban Ocon did not take part in the qualifying session and will start from last place. “I think the pace of the car was very good over the weekend, we were always in the top 10, it was pretty solid in that regard. So we will try to have a good race tomorrow, come back and put on a good show. »
