Williams favors KERS in 2011

Last year, the stable Williams were among those who decided to do without KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery Systems). Banned this year, discussions are underway to determine when and in what form this system could make its return. Within the British team, we think that the sooner the better, advocating a return as early as 2011. Sir Frank Williams and his men were convinced by Ferrari et Renault, two manufacturers convinced that the return of this energy recovery system is now financially profitable.

“Waiting until 2013 was our initial opinion, until Ferrari and Renault proved to FOTA that they could do it for less than a million euros, says Sam Michael on Autosport. We are now in favor of a reintroduction from 2011. It is not like the old KERS which made you spend between 10 and 20 million euros, or even more. Operating costs are now one million euros. »

In addition to being beneficial for Formula 1 Currently, the return of KERS to the premier discipline of motorsport could accelerate the development of energy recovery systems on everyday cars.

“Many road cars now have KERS, continues the technical director of the British team. It would therefore be logical for F1 to adopt it. We thought 2013 was a good date, but if someone proved at the end of March that it was possible to make it work for less than a million euros, then they can do it. For me the advantage is that the car will go faster. If someone has KERS, you can't afford not to adopt it. We are talking about three to four tenths per lap. look McLaren in Abu Dhabi last year. They were very fast before having their brake problems, and that was with the old front tires. Now with the narrower front tires it would be even easier to fully utilize the KERS. »
