Williams could do even better than a 12th time in the rain

Rain levels out performance Formula 1. This adage proved true during qualifying for the Styrian Grand Prix with the astonishing presence ofa Williams in 12th place, that of George Russell.

The British team, in crisis for several years, does not miss these golden opportunities to shine. Claire's men Williams had already distinguished themselves during wet testing for the 2018 Italian Grand Prix (Stroll 10th, Sirotkin 12th).

On the Red Bull Ring, George Russell's performance did not go unnoticed. “We were aiming for Q2, but if someone had told me that we would be less than a tenth from Q3, I wouldn’t have believed it. launched the champion of Formula 2 2018.

It was incredibly tricky. I didn't see much in certain places on the circuit, but I gave everything I had, and it paid off. I had a good feeling behind the wheel and I had a lot of fun. »

Reading between the lines, it seems that the FW43 is faster than expected. "This time does not really reflect the true rhythm of our car, but it is a source of motivation for everyone in the team. »

The only beginner of the season, Nicholas latifi, could have joined his teammate in Q2, without an interruption of the session when he was improving his partials.

“I was surprised how comfortable I felt on the track, gives the Canadian. After all, it was only the first real session where I was able to ride in the wet. I am disappointed because we could easily have progressed to Q2.

My pace, with the first set of tires, allowed me to be in the top 15, but I did not benefit from a single clear lap with my other set of tires, between the traffic and the yellow flags then the red. I'm a little frustrated. »

Williams, through its Chief Performance Officer Dave Robson, aims for an entry into the points this Sunday, almost a year after Robert Kubica's 10th place in Germany... in the rain, again!
