Williams to strengthen its technical partnership with Mercedes from 2022

Already allied on the engine level since 2014 and the advent of V6 turbo hybrids, Williams racing and Mercedes will take their partnership to the next level from 2022, the year of the major upheaval in technical regulations.

The alliance will be strengthened between the English team and the formation of Toto wolff, with in particular the supply of so-called “transferable” elements, including here the gearbox and associated hydraulic components.

Two elements manufactured until now internally at Williams, which will now be able to benefit from the know-how of the star team with a most efficient engine – gearbox assembly.

“Williams is an independent team, but the Formula 1 is constantly evolving, and we must be agile to react to the current situation in order to put the team in the best position to be competitive, says Simon Roberts, Williams Team Principal.

This long-term agreement with Mercedes is a positive step and forms part of our strategic objectives for the future, whilst retaining our design and manufacturing capabilities in-house. »

Williams, bought last year by American investors, will follow the example ofAston Martin Racing, built on the foundations of Racing Point, which uses the Mercedes engine-box assembly, in addition to certain other elements. A logical choice which also suits Mercedes management.

“It makes sense in terms of economies of scale to provide another team under the new rules, specifies Toto Wolff, Mercedes Team Principal. This is a project that we have been discussing with Williams for some time and I am happy that we were able to bring this expansion to fruition. »

Remember that Mercedes will also provide McLaren on the motor level, the Woking formation passing from Renault to the German brand this year.
