Williams withdraws appeal against Racing Point

Renault et Ferrari will be the only ones to appeal against the Racing Point brake ducts, the design of which was deemed legal but not the concept itself. After McLaren Tuesday, Williams also announced Wednesday its withdrawal from the appeal.

The team waited until the last moment to make its decision public.  “After careful consideration, we believe that the FIA’s decision to call for a ban on extensive reproduction of cars from 2021 addresses our most fundamental concern.”

Nikolas Tombazis, technical manager of the FIA single-seater series, said that measures will be taken from 2021 so as not to end up with clones on the grand prix grid of Formula 1. According to Williams, this intention “reaffirms the role and responsibility of a manufacturer within the sport, which is fundamental to the DNA of Formula 1 and the core beliefs and principles of Williams. »

McLaren and Williams therefore both decided to initially appeal against Racing Point's brake ducts, copies of those of Mercedes,  before withdrawing. The two teams have in common that they are powered by Mercedes (from next year for McLaren).

Ferrari and Renault, for their part, maintain their appeal. They believe that the sanctions imposed on Racing Point are too lenient. 400 euros fine and 000 points were withdrawn, for the only Styrian Grand Prix.

Despite continued complaints from Renault in particular, Racing Point only received reprimands for the following grands prix. Too little compared to the damage suffered throughout the season, according to the two manufacturers.

Even without McLaren and Williams, the series continues.
