Michelin seems on track to make a comeback in Formula 1, the Clermont-Ferrand firm being the most serious to succeed Bridgestone, which will withdraw at the end of the 2010 season. As AUTOhebdo confided to you this week, Michelin however wishes to arrive in F1 with certain conditions. In particular, the French manufacturer would prefer that F1 tires be closer to those used in other disciplines, with a preference for 18-inch tires. A possibility supported by Sam Michael, technical director of the team Williams.
« I think it's a very good idea, says Michael. I would love it, it adapts well to modern-day F1. Having a 13 inch rim requires having very specific tires. Although Kumho, Avon, Bridgestone, GoodYear and Michelin make them, they are truly F1 specific tires. So, if we get to 18-inch tires, I think it will be a good thing to preserve the future of our sport because 18-inch tires are used much more. They have an important history in motorsport and are closer to road car tires. »
