Wolff calms things down despite Mercedes domination: “The gaps are minimal”

Toto Wolff is careful not to claim an easy victory despite an ideal start to the season for Mercedes. The culture of winning must be preserved to continue the victorious path started in 2014.

Wolff calms things down despite Mercedes domination: “The gaps are minimal”

After the first triplet of events in this 2020 season of Formula 1, the team Mercedes can be calm, with three victories and a double. In the Manufacturers' Championship, l’Étoile has a lead of 66 points on his direct pursuer, Red Bull. As for Lewis Hamilton, it has 30 units of margin on the “first of others”, Max Verstappen (Red Bull, 3rd).

Asked about this permanent domination since the introduction of the V6 Turbo hybrid regulations in 2014, Toto wolff showed pragmatism. “I’m not sure I’ve seen the competition decimated in Hungary. The Red Bull struggled all weekend, then it was convincing in the race, while Verstappen's car could have not started (after an accident in the grid lap. Editor’s note) and the mechanics did an incredible job. »

The Austrian boss cites this example to reflect the uncertainty that governs sport. “The differences are minimal. With Lewis dropping out, his championship lead disappears. We must continue to attack. We didn't complete 20% of the season. Three important races are coming up for us. »

If the Mercedes team has remained at the forefront of the peloton for six years, the key to success does not lie in a specific area. “I think it is not due to one element in particular, the aerodynamic concept or the engine development in alliance with the right strategies.

It’s a multitude of areas that work together. The investment with the appropriate resources, the degree of motivation we can extract from our R&D group (Research and development).

Basically, everything depends on the men and women in the factory. We have seen over the seasons that several generations have succeeded one another and added performance to the team. But this isn't just the case on the mechanical side of Mercedes; it’s in every area. Marketing, communication, social networks, sponsors, this is what increases the success of the team. »

Toto Wolff does not want to get carried away. His speech is repeated tirelessly, but could it be precisely this cautious mentality that is the success of the German manufacturer in F1? « We must not get carried away with thinking that we are the best, because that’s when you quickly start to lose. »
