Nyck de Vries soon to be tenured at Alpha Tauri et Stoffel Vandoorne leaves for Aston Martin, Mercedes suddenly found itself without a reserve. For the moment no driver has been announced by the German team for the 2023 season. But in recent weeks, a rumor has been gaining momentum and it leads straight to Daniel Ricciardo.

Not preserved by McLaren and without a place on the grid for 2023, the Australian does not want to move away from the F1. It is for this reason that he is seeking to obtain a reserve position with a view to a possible return as a starter in 2024. Among the avenues mentioned, Daniel Ricciardo has often been associated with Mercedes. Lewis Hamilton linked until the end of next season and whose extension has not yet been signed, the former pilot Renault could represent a good opportunity for the Germans in 2024 in the event of the Englishman's departure at the end of the following campaign.

Wolff interested in Ricciardo?

These rumors from the corridor have obviously reached the ears of Toto wolff. Nothing very surprising. If he remained evasive when discussing the rumor, the main Mercedes team wanted to salute Daniel Ricciardo whose personality and knowledge of the profession he admires.

« It seems to me that Daniel is speaking with several teams regarding a possible reserve position., said Toto Wolff in Mexico. He It even seems to me that he is exchanging with Red Bull. For our part, it's a profile that we really like, he's a great character. However, we are not yet in a position to decide who our reserve will be next year. He has a great personality and has been in the business for a long time, he knows these cars inside and out. This could be a great advantage."

Too early yet but time is running out. With its current reservists heading towards new horizons, Mercedes must replace them. By Daniel Ricciardo? Maybe, but Toto Wolff doesn’t want to “ say too much » because the decision has not yet been made.
