Wolff: Mercedes must “keep its feet on the ground”

Mercedes AMG F1 achieved a third consecutive double at the Chinese Grand Prix with a new success of Lewis Hamilton before Nico Rosberg. While the 2008 world champion was never worried after starting from pole, the German was in more difficulty as he fell to sixth position. But the performance of his W05 allowed him to move up the rankings. However, the Brackley team is still closely observing developments in the competition.

Toto wolff noted that Red Bull et Ferrari could be faster than the Mercedes at times. “We have to be careful”, commented the executive director of Mercedes, comments reported by Adam Cooper. " They come back. We could see Alonso et Ricciardo come back before regaining time. It's rather interesting because we have seen situations in the last few races where the times get tighter when the tires become worn. We need to understand how our adversaries exploit energy and gas mileage. They sometimes seem faster and then fail to keep up the pace until the finish. »

If the hierarchy may evolve with the start of the European season which will take place in three weeks in Barcelona, Mercedes AMG F1 is aware that its start to the season is idyllic. “It’s indeed better than expected”, adds Toto Wolff. “I don't think we can approach a season with these new regulations by saying that we are going to win four times in a row. I also suspect we'll think it was a hell of a time when we look back on it over the next few years. To say that we are not satisfied when we have one car in the lead and the other in fifth or sixth place… We have to keep our feet on the ground and stay ahead in the development race because it will undoubtedly get closer. »
