Wolff: Mercedes must adapt to the new situation

Mercedes must no longer focus solely on the performance of the Team Ferrari. Red Bull Racing managed to make up part of his deficit by notably winning the Azerbaijan GP last June in Baku with the victory of Daniel Ricciardo.

“The rules changed this year to rebalance the forces within the field and it worked, Note Toto wolff. For the first time ever, the reigning champion team has maintained its status after a significant change in the regulations and we are proud of it. But that’s ancient history now. »

“We were joined by Ferrari and also Red Bull as the season progressed. This is the new reality of competition and we are open to the idea of adapting our approach according to these new circumstances… Red Bull will be a threat if it delivers the performances displayed in Hungary”, adds Toto Wolff.

Mercedes must react since Sebastian Vettel now leads the Drivers' Championship with 14 points ahead of Lewis Hamilton, while Scuderia Ferrari operates with 39 units from the star-studded team. The German manufacturer will have the opportunity to improve its situation this weekend at the Belgian GP where the Spa-Francorchamps track should favor the W08s.

“People say that the Spa circuit will suit our car because it is a circuit where aerodynamic efficiency is very important, continues Toto Wolff. Assumptions remain dangerous. We've had too many times this year that what needed to happen could be rewritten from one weekend to the next. »

Mercedes could end up favoring Lewis Hamilton in the race for the Drivers' title, the three-time world champion having lost 3 points by giving 3rd place back to his teammate Valtteri Bottas at the Hungarian Grand Prix contested on July 30. The Finn, however, has his chances by now playing 19 units behind the Briton.
