Wolff: “Mick Schumacher has the potential to be in F1”

While Mick Schumacher climbs the ladder of accession to F1, the executive director of Mercedes Motorsport Toto wolff closely observes the progress of the son of the seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher who was an ambassador for the star brand until his terrible skiing accident.

“He won the F3 this year with Mercedes engines, which is fantastic, but he is not part of the Mercedes-Benz young driver program, commented the Austrian during the FIA Awards Gala organized this Friday in Saint Petersburg (Russia). The most important thing is to give it time. He carries with him the incredible legend of his father who was the most successful driver of all time. »

If Mick Schumacher is not supported by a development program, his presence at Prema could bring him closer to Ferrari where his father shone in the premier single-seater discipline.

“He is now in F2, which should be very difficult for him since he will face many experienced drivers. I am sure he has the potential to be a successful F1 driver. Maybe with us, maybe not”, added the director of the Mercedes sports branch.

Toto Wolff also highlighted Mercedes' level of involvement in supporting young drivers.

“We are looking for young drivers as we have done in the past, with Pascal Wehrlein, Esteban Ocon and George Russell. We hope to see these young guns succeed in F1 and make their own careers and stay with Mercedes one day. It’s very important that our brand is involved in this”, added Toto Wolff.
