Alessandro Zanardi remains in intensive care

This Wednesday, June 24 at noon, the Santa Maria Elle Scotte Hospital in Siena released a new health bulletin concerning Alessandro Zanardi. The Italian driver, victim of a serious road accident when he was out on a handbike on Friday June 19, remains in a worrying state.

In fact, the doctors did not notice any developments concerning the former pilot of Formula 1« Alessandro Zanardi’s conditions remain stable, hospitalized in the intensive care unit of the polyclinic.

The athlete spent the fifth night in the hospital without substantial change in his clinical conditions, with regard to cardio-respiratory and metabolic parameters, and the neurological picture remains serious. Neuromonitoring continues and is constantly evaluated by a team composed mainly of anesthesiologists-intensivists and neurosurgeons, supported by a multidisciplinary team based on different clinical needs. The patient is still sedated, intubated and mechanically ventilated and the prognosis remains confidential.

After hearing from the family, it is considered useful to do not issue further medical bulletins until there are significant changes in his state of health. »

Doctors had announced the day before that the neurological condition of the Paralympic athlete would not be known until the first tests expected next week.  This Wednesday morning, Pope Francis wrote a handwritten letter towards the WTCC winner in which he sends his thoughts and prayers.

Admitted to intensive care on Friday At the end of the day, Alessandro Zanardi underwent a 3-hour major surgery for serious head and jaw injuries after being rushed to hospital by helicopter.

The 53-year-old Italian, who had his legs amputated after a terrible Champ Car accident in 2001 at the Lausitzring (Germany), was carrying out a handbike training session with the Paralympic team when he lost control of his vehicle and found himself on the other side of the road. The multiple Paralympic gold medalist was unable to avoid an oncoming truck.
