Alex Bowman to replace Jimmie Johnson at Hendrick in 2021

We knew that 2021 would be the end of an era in Nascar Cup Series and within the Hendrick Motorsports team with the announcement of the retirement of Jimmie Johnson, or at least the end of his full-time involvement in the discipline.

Rick Hendrick's team therefore had to find a replacement for the seven-time champion, and therefore offer a seat that has become legendary in recent years. It will ultimately be Alex bowman, current driver of the No. 88 after the departure of Dale Earnhardt Jr, who will take over from Johnson.

He will continue with his chief mechanic Greg Ives, who will find a car where he worked as an engineer between 2006 and 2012 during Jimmie Johnson's title raid.

“Every season, Alex improves, says Rick Hendrick. Not only do we see it in the stats, but his confidence and leadership have really blossomed. Today he is a winning driver and Chase contender, and his best years are ahead.

Greg has won championships and races, and he brings the pedigree of the No. 48 that is invaluable. »

“I have worked my whole life to be in a situation like this, explains Alex Bowman, winner in Fontana, California at the start of the year. The opportunity to drive a legendary car like the #48 with the incredible support of Ally is indescribable.

I'm excited to develop my relationship with Greg, who is a top team leader and knows the car well. The pieces are in place and I'm grateful to Mr. Hendrick and everyone at Hendrick Motorsports and Ally. We are ready to get it right. »

It now remains to be seen who will drive the No. 88 Chevrolet next year. An announcement which should come in the coming weeks.
