The fourth round of the Nürburgring Langstrecken-Serie (NLS), championship taking place only on the German circuit and the famous Nordschleife, was marked by a terrible accident in the paddock, Friday August 2, 2024. A compressed air bottle exploded during free practice behind a stand, causing 22 injured (including 4 seriously) sent to hospitals in the region.

A few days later, while a police investigation is still underway, the organizers of the championship (VLN) announced the launch of their own investigations in order to understand the reasons for this tragedy and above all, to learn lessons from it in order to to better secure the paddocks.

“We don't want to fall into blind activism now, but the incident before the NLS 4 event showed that action was needed, humbly explains Christian Vormann, sports director of the VLN. From our point of view, however, it makes no sense to simply impose any rules on teams. On the one hand, we need real experts in the field of compressed air tanks – and we have them in our partner Dekra.

On the other hand, the measures intended for teams must be able to be implemented. This is where we trust the knowledge of ILN (Interessengemeinschaft Langstrecke Nürburgring, which represents the interests of the teams and drivers of the NLS and the 24 Hours of the Nürburgring. Editor's note). »

Finally, a collection of donations was published on the championship website. “Solidarity in the paddock was great on Friday evening and Saturday and I was contacted spontaneously by many drivers, team managers, partners and friends asking how we could support the people and teams affected”, continues VLN boss Mike Jäger.

“Regarding the state of health of the injured, we can only keep our fingers crossed and hope for a good recovery. Donations will be used to prevent monetary harm to anyone who was affected and to cover any treatment costs that may arise. We are a big family at the Ring and we stick together, even in difficult times. »

Donations for those affected can be made to the following account:
VLN VV GmbH & Co. KG
Bank: Kreissparkasse Ahrweiler
IBAN: DE61 5775 1310 0000 3001 37
