Paraplegic since an accident in IndyCar at Pocono in 2018, Robert Wickens has not given up on his ambition to participate in some of the biggest car races in the world. A driver at Hyundai Since 2022, Wickens won the Michelin Pilot Challenge TCR title the following year. While his participation last weekend in theIMSA from Long Beach at the wheel of a Corvette from the DXDT team (qualified eighth, the Canadian finished fifteenth with his teammate Tommy Milner) could have augured a future in Grand Touring racing, the 36-year-old driver has not cut ties with Hyundai, far from it.

Wickens is once again heading out on an adventure with the Korean brand and the Bryan Herta Autosport team, this time on the legendary German Nürburgring track. This won't be the Guelph, Ontario native's first time on the Nordschleife, as he participated in a round of the NLS championship last year. That participation unfortunately ended after four hours of racing, with a massive crash that left his Hyundai Elantra N TCR on the other side of the barriers, while the driver was taken to the hospital for precautionary tests.

While the Nürburgring 24 Hours wasn't on the cards when he competed last year, Robert Wickens will likely have to compete in one of these preparatory races again. Armed with new steering wheel controls developed with Bosch, the Canadian driver is eager to tackle one of the world's toughest races, the Green Hell of the Nürburgring.

“As an athlete, I am constantly looking to push myself and explore new opportunities to grow and improve my skills. I always strive to be the best version of myself, both on and off the track. Hyundai, Bosch and Bryan Herta Autosport have an incredible team spirit and I am thrilled to have the chance to return and compete in one of the most demanding endurance races in the world.”

The 24 Hours of Nürburgring will take place on June 21 and 22, the week after the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and the one before the 24 Hours of Spa.
