Brodie Kostecki (Ford Mustang #17 – Dick Johnson Racing) put on a truly masterful performance this weekend at the prestigious Albert Park circuit. He won three races and secured a brilliant second place in the one he didn't win. Simply untouchable, Kostecki reaped the rewards of rigorous preparation during the off-season. The DJR driver lost 20 kg and trained diligently for the new season. His team has provided him with a highly effective car, which also benefits from the resurgence of the Ford Mustang against the competition. Since the start of the season and the seven races contested, he has added three wins and two podium finishes to his record. He is deservedly leading the championship, ahead of rivals who were far too scattered this weekend.
Feeney involved in a huge crash
The Triple Eight driver can consider himself lucky after the spectacular collision he suffered at the start of this final race of the weekend. It all started with Kai Allen (Ford Mustang #26 – Whole grained Racing), hit by Ryan Wood (Toyota Supra #2 – TGW Racing). The two damaged cars arrived at the first corner in disarray, causing chaos in the field. Feeney, 11th on the grid, was a collateral victim of the incident. His car spun across the track and was violently struck by Cooper Murray (Chevrolet Camaro #99 – Erebus Motorsport). Feeney's car was destroyed, but fortunately, his driver escaped without injury.

The opponents' response is being prepared... slowly
At the restart after the safety car period, Will Brown (Ford Mustang #888 – Triple Eight Engineering) maintained his lead over Thomas Randle (Ford Mustang #50 – Tickford Racing) and Brodie Kostecki. Further back, Matt Payne, involved in a collision, plummeted down the order and finished only 20th in the race. Chaz Mostert, the 2025 champion, had mixed feelings about this second meeting of the 2026 season. He experienced some up-and-down performance, but still managed two top-five finishes and points for eighth place in this final race. "Mozzie" will need to refine his approach, but there are many reasons to be satisfied with the Supra's potential. For Chevrolet, the weekend was once again somewhat challenging. Jack Le Brocq (Chevrolet Camaro #4 – Matt Stone Racing) was the only driver able to challenge the Ford contingent (P13, P6, P10, and P4).
In the final laps, Brodie Kostecki seized the lead, overtook Will Brown, and won in style. He thus claimed the Larry Perkins Trophy, awarded to the best performer of the Melbourne weekend.
In the championship standings, he leads consistent driver Cam Waters (Ford Mustang #6 – Tickford Racing) and Broc Feeney, who ultimately fared rather well after this eventful weekend. Will Brown secured his first podium finish of the season, as did Thomas Randle. There's little time to recover from the excitement – and rebuild the severely damaged cars. The next round is scheduled for April 9-12 in Taupō, New Zealand, but the shipping containers must be dispatched as early as next week.
